Kozyndan's new book of small but disturbing portraiture reveals just how skilled the duo are as illustrators...

Apparently taking inspiration from a photograph album found in a thrift store in California, artists Kozyndan (namely Dan and Koze Kitchens) created a series of small portraits of the contents, each beautifully rendered in fine pencil on paper.

Wickett's Mistress

Collected in book form, the work is interspersed with some equally deft short stories by a host of talented writers.

Long Neck Sally

The portraits themselves are, in turn, surreal, grotesque, or just obviously set in the 1980s, but each exudes the dark humour that is usually to be found lurking within Kozyndan's often deceptively cuddly work.

The Unknown Portraits by Kozyndan is published by Magic Pony; £25.

I am believing I actually bought some of their work... with rabbits and the whatnot...

But is this work, now on display, not actually just a little bit shit?

Reminds me of being previously in secondary school and looking at the walls of the art room...

I probably be missing something - I very often do, LOL

....portraiture reveals just how skilled the duo are as illustrators....

Surely critique should be based on sources and not just the writers opinion. Can you please advise as to why you are writing what you are writing. Private blogs are ok...your a national publication.

I've not seen the book or heard of the artist before, but judging from these I'm not impressed. The ideas are pretty ho-hum, and if they're "straight" drawings they woefully fall short on technique, or is the crude pencilwork supposed to be part of the mystique of the images? If so then sorry, it's a bit too subtle for me (and the rest of the populace I suspect).

You know those guys who draw your portrait near Picadilly Circus (or anywhere touristy). Well... them. Incidentally, why doesn't CR ever cover those guys? Not cool enough?

Is it really skill and talent when you poorly copy original images that look like they would have been better left as photos?

there are guys out there like myself who spend years working on honing their skills, trying to create decent images for clients, only to find that the majority of what get featured in the trade magazines is really awful, child like drivel that gets away with it by being the work of some trendy, 'happening' individual or studio. The pencilwork by Kozyndan is just the most recent example of this. How about taking a look at those of us who can draw for a change
