Error on Page by Faye Heavey (in response to Love Creative)

David Holcroft, a graphic design tutor at Pendleton College in Salford, sent us details of a recent project that his 16 and 17 year old students took on: design a cover for CR. We thought their efforts were great, so wanted to share them on the blog...

David emailed a PDF of the project, in which he asked the students to create a cover and a two page article on a design studio or ad agency of their choosing. All the students are in their first year of studying graphic design as a BTEC national diploma at Pendleton College. The project is the result of their first experiments with InDesign.

The brief for the students was as follows: "Over the next few months the magazine wishes to run a feature on some of the country's best contemporary design agencies. It will be your job to create a front cover that communicates an appropriate message for one of these agencies: BBH, TBWA, Pentagram, The Chase, Saatchi & Saatchi, BBDO Abbott Mead Vickers, Fallon, Love Creative, Spin, NB: Studio, Leo Burnett, Wolff Olins, BMB, Ogilvy, Non-Format, Why Not Associates, St Lukes, McCann Erickson, Barnbrook, and Poke."

Here are a few of our favourites (the complete set is at the bottom of the post).

Creative Spark by Alex McBurnie (in response to The Chase). Eye-catching colours on black, always strong.

Propaganda by Melissa Egan (in response to Saatchi & Saatchi). Nice to see some illustration being used.

Happiness by Josh Shaw (in response to Love Creative). A riot of colour; bound to stand out on the shelves.

Simple Solutions by Matthew Jones (in response to Non-Format). Simple indeed, but really effective.

Motion by Kirsty Williams (in response to Non-Format). Might be a bit pricey with the fluro inks but a great image.

Vinyl by George Aldred (in response to Non-Format). With a special finish, this one could work really well.

Three of the students' editorial pages, on BBH and Non-Format:

BBH editorial by Peter Matthews

Non-Format editorial by Michael Upton

Non-Format editorial by James Landing

And here's the full set:

The students who took part in the project were Jack Brittell, Damian Collins, April Donnelly, Melissa Egan, Mike Emerson, Steven Hill, James Landing, Josh Lang, Amy Lines, Brian Lobeda, Daniel Lord, Alex McBurnie, Tom Morgan, Sean Pendlebury, James Shaw, Josh Shaw, Michael Upton, Kirsty Williams, David Adu Dwumaa, George Aldred, Emma Broadie, Robert Brooks, Rebecca Cascoe, James Davies, Paul Derbyshire, Sean Frost, Josh Harfield, Faye Heavey, Hayley Higson, Jonathon Hodson, Matthew Jones, Lee Kelly, Peter Matthews, Michael McCarthy, Lee Stephenson, and Philippa Williams. Good luck in your studies!

some of these are really striking, and with the right choice of paper weight and finish would look great

The first or 3rd one along on the 2nd row look great, would love to get an enlarged view.

Good work considering their youth.

i'm a bit surprised to see "ctrl + z" up there - i realise you can't really claim creative ownership of a keyboard shortcut, but given the popularity of this Threadless t-shirt (http://packphour.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/minizoom.jpg) and the similar use of font... i'm not convinced it's an original approach.

some really nice work overall though, i particularly like the one by kirsty williams.

Fantastic! My favourite is Happiness by Josh Shaw. Makes me feel happy just looking at it! Great examples of design by everyone though. I like the last one of the first row too!
Be nice to see more projects from students in the future i think!

Really Impressive,
My favourite has to be Matthew jones' piece,
A brilliantly minimalist composition, backed up with an ironic and amusing concept

The magenta 'simple' piece of typorgraphy is a complete rip off of Seb Lester's work.

Is it just me that isn't really impressed?

Im really not looking forward to receiving any of these designs and just cant pick one that i like. There all have a typical " a graphic design magazine should look like this, cos thats what everyone else is doing look"

Boy, if i had this brief when i was in college i'd try damn harder to make mine stand out and be something totally unexpected for Creative Review.

I have to say i'm quite impressed by all the work i've seen so far, and I think what people are forgetting when they're commenting and judging these pieces is that they have been created by 16 and 17 year students who are still learning. Also, I hardly think you can accuse them of ripping off other peoples work who they probably arent even aware of. Keep up the good work guys!

I think they've done quite a nice job, my favourites are Happiness and Simple Solutions.

@ emo - yeah definately, i mean if i got asked to design a CR cover i wouldn't make it a cover at all id glue down feathers and emboss a distant family members nose into an elaborate postage box and have it flown to each subscribers house by pig.

how do you suggest your work would be any different or any better than 'the average cover' sounds a little conceited to be honest.

considering who they
are i think they did some nice pieces if im honest. :)

God, what's with the whole "I am holier than thou" comments? They're students for fucksake.

I think some CR readers need to go and get a grip and stop being up their own arses.

When I was 17 the only computer I knew of was a Sega Megadrive.

Considering their age its impressive that they have pretty refined skills with digital, illustration and photography.

I agree with James - the whole point of being a student is to try out and embrace new ideas, thinking and direction. The real world will catch up with them soon enough.

Some great work there and I'm jealous of their talents.

Considering these are FIRST year students I am seriously impressed. As someone just about to launch a somewhat different editorial design project for my first years I would be interested in seeing Mr Holcroft's Scheme of Work ;)- the guy gets a pat on the back from me. Well done!
