CR readers, here's your chance to quiz Neville Brody about his work, life, opinions on design and anything else for that matter
Brody is giving his D&AD President's Lecture this Wednesday (November 25). Titled Neville Brody: Wanker or Genius? the lecture will actually be in the form of a discussion with design writer Adrian Shaughnessy. Although Shaughnessy no doubt has plenty of questions of his own prepared, he has also agreed to submit some on behalf of CR readers.
So, if there is anything you'd like to ask Brody about, here's your chance. Just go on to Twitter and tweet your question using the hashtag #Brodydandad. If you don't use Twitter, put your question in the comments section here and we will post it up for you.
On the night, the Twitter feed will be displayed on-screen so that everyone can see the submitted questions. This will also allow the audience to comment on the discussion as it goes along and ask their own questions.
CR readers can also claim the dubious distinction of being responsible for the title for Brody's Lecture: it comes from some of the personal and somewhat vicious comments aimed at him following our stories about the D&AD New Blood campaign and his recent Wallpaper* cover (also here).
At the end of the evening, the audience will be invited to vote on whether they think Brody is, indeed, a Wanker or a Genius by holding up cards (one shown top, one below).

So, if you were one of the people offering up forthright opinions about Brody in previous stories here on the CR Blog, now is your chance to question the man himself.
UPDATE: The first two questions are up on Twitter. From Designer Dan, Is it true you were almost thrown out of the college for putting the Queen's head sideways on a postage stamp design? From Permanent Studio, What font will your Epitaph be carved in?

I just want to know why the word "wanker" is so hilarious? Cos it is, it truly is.
As a title, Neville Brody: Wanker or Genius is genius and totally lackng in wankitude. Like, totally.

What is hot in typography now?

I was tempted to take my own card with "boring" written on it.
But frankly this is such waste of time that I'm not going to bother ruining one of my free tickets on it. I'd rather put it between two slices of bread and eat it.

Anyone who would present themselves to an audience to ask this question is well and truly a WANKER and a half
2009-11-24 13:57:08
Yeah, I recently made a post which was talking about 'Blanka' and suggested with all the designer dross they sell to other designers, they should change their name to 'Wanka'. I thought that was pretty funny, but my post was removed and I was told to refrain 'from name calling'. How things change when it's a D&AD story.
2009-11-24 14:13:27
But surely you can be both wanker and genius? I know I am.
2009-11-24 14:15:50
Seems lazy, and doesn't scratch the surface in my opinion, though I'm sure someone somewhere will find enormous depth and significance in it. A bit like hanging a plain wooden-framed mirror in the Tate.
2009-11-24 14:23:11
I thought we were all wankers anyway.

It's a thin line (0.5pt to be exact) between wanker and genius anyway.
2009-11-24 14:34:50
A bit like the Apprentice aftershow where Adrian Chiles asks the audience to hold up a Fired or Hired card. It's all academic as Sir Al has already fired them. Whatever you hold up won't make any difference to Neville as he's been labelled with both descriptions in the past. Maybe you should cut up the cards and make up an anagram of your own and be original...'kew gain a nurse' for instance. That'll baffle him.
2009-11-24 14:50:29
i would even go as thin as 0.35pt...

Numty spring in to mind.

Question for Mr Brody
What's your favourite typeface? Do you have a limit on the amount of typefaces you use these days?

I suppose you are half way there if you're called Neville so it isn't fair really.

In my experience I have found that almost all graphic designers have a problem differentiating between these two concepts. A case in point is my first boss, [deleted by moderator], who told me in my job interview and witohut a shred of irony "Your work is like masturbation, but my work is like making love". He then proved his point by showing me his work - Silkience shampoo labels. I learned a lot about the design industry from my first boss and his staff and later many other great insights from the tutors at the Berkshire College of Art and Design. Sigh, where are they now?

Question for Neville Brody:
Is the standard of enrollment required at universities too low? Has a desire to fill seats in the classroom overtaken the desire to ensure only the best graduate?
2009-11-24 17:21:00
binary.
2009-11-24 17:30:48
Did you ever realize how powerful is design in people's lives? I guess you did Mr Brody.
Did you ever think that it was too much for yourself? Did graphic design ever scare you? Do you have any ethical approach to your job?
thanks!

@ Alex Szabo-Haslam
You don't need to ask bloody Brody that question. OF COURSE the standard of enrollment required at universities too low. OF COURSE the desire to fill seats in the classroom has overtaken the desire to ensure only the best graduate.
Question for Mr Brody #1: are you with the NHS or do you have private healthcare?
Question for Mr Brody #2: where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Question for Mr Brody #3: DELETED BY ACTION MAN

Hi
Two extremes of judgment indeed. Overly so to my mind, but if you're in the business of self promotion, why not invite the Emperor's thumb sign?
Good luck Neville. Rather you than me.
Cheers
Paul

the word "wanker" is out.
ten years ago, everyone's saying this word, ten years later, still using the same word?!
its out of date!

Do you wish you had worked harder on your dissertation at LCP.

Genius? Wanker? I don't know...but god, he is sexy!

Question:
You're always cited as being a design hero / icon / inspiration, but do you have heroes, and who are they?

Question: how do you advise someone who is a young designer to start developing typographic practice

Question for Mr. Brody: "do you still date this beautiful lady sitting next to you at your 1993 Fontshop lecture in Gent/Belgium?"

After attending what was supposed to be a lecture given by Neville on the 25th Nov I can't help but be completely deflated by the man.
He had nothing insightful to say in any way, shape or form. He spent most of his time asking to have questions repeated to him, fiddling with his laptop and contradicting himself.
I think the 'Brody worship' days are numbered and he doesn't help himself by supplying the nails to his coffin and passing around the hammer.
Massive disappointment and a farce of a lecture.

Have you designed a typeface for yourself? and I'd love to see what your handwriting looks like. How's the painting course going? Catherine in Guernsey
