Advice that sticks

Graphic Design

Posted by Gavin Lucas, 9 October 2009, 12:00    Permalink    Comments (27)

We're always sending out packages - usually with a magazine or two in them - that require the use of some sturdy sticky tape to ensure the envelopes don't split at the seams. So we will definitely make good use of our new sticky tape - which arrived in the post this morning courtesy of Blanka...

The clear sticky tape features words of wisdom from a selection of well-respected graphic designers set in good ol' Akzidenz Grotesk. Designers quoted are Mark Farrow, Michael C. Place, Wim Crouwel, Adrian Shaughnessy, Tony Brook, Ben Stott, Storm Thorgerson, Daniel Eatock and Hamish Muir. "It's based on the principle 'that good advice sticks'," says Blanka's Mark Blamire.

The tape was designed by James Greenfield (gradiate.co.uk) and a roll will cost you £7 (including postage) - available from blanka.co.uk

No-one else apart from (some) graphic designers would know who on earth these people are. I hardly think most of my clients on the receiving end would follow the advice of 'If in doubt, reverse it out', for example. They'd assume it was advice on their driving.

Another fantastic example of just how far removed your typical graphic designer's life has become from real, actual life. Why don't all the people listed sleep together and get it over with? One big sticky night of pleasure, intoxicated with their own self-importance.

I couldn't agree more with "The Bunk". And Simon, it's just tape, use it cause if you don't someone else will in 100 years time when you're not here.

@The Bunk
You're argument doesn't stick…

@Anon
…neither does 100-year old tape!

Ahthankyoo.

I have received a pearl of wisdom in feedback from a Korean client earlier on today. Too late to make the tape but I thought you should all make it part of your life. ' In addition there is no point entirely' What's all that about? T - shirt production to start shortly.

I don't think it really matters who the quotes are by, the content is pretty universal and I can see maybe 1 that isn't

I think a lot of terms featured above relate to any industry, fair enough some might not know the author but it's an interesting idea that... sticks.

Far too much seriousness for something that is a bit of fun.

Children of the Revolution,

Last time I looked Blanka was an on-line store thats sells graphic design products mainly to more graphic designers.

It's only a wild guess but do you think this tape could be aimed at their target market?

No, that would be crazy...

Keep the Faith.

I'm probably just tight, but I was more concerned with seven quid for a roll of sticky tape...

You have to love Blanka, a £50 voucher to spend in their shop will cost you £57 to buy.

"The clear sticky tape features words of wisdom from a selection of well-respected graphic designers"

hahahaha, "treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself" aren't really words of wisdom by M C Place are they? unless this is 'ask-a-designer-their-favourite-words-of-wisdom-by-someone-else-sticky-tape'?

I cannot help but think this sticky tape is almost 'preaching' messages to whoever sees it. I like the idea and think it is innovative but is it really necessary?? I mean for one thing the price is extotrionate for a roll of sticky-tape but could there not be an easier way of sending out these messages?

On a lighter note, I think the design is very interesting and the contrast in font sizes look good and appealling to the eye. It is the type of thing that you would use as a joke and can't help but catch your eye. When I first saw this, I couldn't help but think of that cheap Christmas sellotape you can get that has 'Merry Christmas' written all over it. I do not want that to sound demeaning to the creator of the tape as I do think it is a creative idea but that is all I can compare it with.

The quotes included are one's that have often been heard of before but the way they have been used on the tape is very interesting, although I agree with a comment earlier that the authors are slightly irrelevant and it is unlikely how many people will care.

It does question what graphic designer's will do next? I completely agree that fresh ideas are great and obviously they want to come up with something different but how far can they go. At the end of the day sticky tape is just used to fasten something together, it is probably not the best method of getting a message across as it may not even be read in the first place.

I think this simple yet effective idea is creative and I can understand the logic behind it but the juxtaposition of such sincere and meaningful quotes being printed on a roll of standard sticky tape, somehow loses the power behind the words.

A little repetitive isn't it?!

@ dave – 'Treat others as you would expect...' is in my opinion (well they did ask me didn't they?) something I think is a piece of advice that applies not only to life but to business/design (for me anyway). (for instance) How many times have you busted your proverbial balls to get a job done, gone that extra mile only to then spend 4 months chasing payment?
Would you rather I said something like 'Always put your pencils away at the end of the day'?

Totally agree with Lil Pete and totally disagree with all of the negative comments. Its a novelty item, why has it inspired such a reaction? :oS

Awesome idea. If a bit pretentious. No sure if i'd use the tape and risk coming off a bit of a 'preacher' as an earlier comment suggests. Can't remember the last time i used sticky tape for anything. Good concept, weak medium.

No one beats Martí Guixé's tapes. http://www.guixe.com. Humoristic, poetic and useful.
Completely agree with The Bunk. This tape is pure onanism graphic design.

Its handbags at dawn out there!

To conclude:
If you didn't get asked, you're not in the club - don't be bitter.
If you did get asked, you're in the club - well done.

Its a roll of tape with nice type and a splash of designer wisdom - buy it, forget it or shut up bitching.
