CR Readers Panel

CR are looking for readers to take part in a new monthly feature in the magazine, where YOU crit the work...

Each month we want to hold a round table discussion with a panel of three CR readers to look at a selection of the latest projects that have been sent in to the office.

The conversation will then appear in the Crit section of the magazine.

You don't have to be a professional creative – you just have to have strong opinions on creative work.

So if you're interested in taking part, email Mark on mark.sinclair@centaur.co.uk with a little bit about what you do and why you want to take part. You can also include a link to your own work if you want to.

Readers will need to be able to travel to the CR office in central London (see our address details and map below) where our first session is set to take place this Friday January 29 at 2pm.

We have a pretty decent tea and coffee machine and there'll even be some biscuits in it too.

So, CR readers, if you want the chance to have your say in the magazine, as well as on the blog, then get in touch.

I would love to take part in something like this, but unfortunately, I live in Chicago. Any possibility of setting up a Skype call to spread the creative criticism internationally?

@Laura

We would definitely like to involve readers from outside the UK - around 70% of the readers of this site are non-UK. But the problem will be that people will not be able to look at physical objects - books, magazines etc. – unless we have sufficient time and copies to send them out to you. For some projects it is enough to see images, others really need to be handled, flicked through etc. We will be looking at ways to approach this though and thanks for your interest. Thanks also to all those who have emailed Mark - we've had a great response already.

to review creative work sounds like the job that the staff of the magazine are supposed to be doing.
will you be paying a staff wage for your 'readers' time?

is cr being to doubt its own ability to judge creative work? my readership is based upon cr ability to pick interesting articles and offer an insightful critical placement. i dont want just pretty pictures and mouthy johns voting hit or miss.

@ Maud

Calm down darling. I'm sure CR have got the idea in a firm grip, it's not going to like blockbusters.

I think it's a good idea to hear what people in the industry think (and not just certain figureheads...).
As long as it's kept in perspective, it should be a welcome addition to the magazines structure, which of course needs to be constantly updated... otherwise we'd get rather bloody bored.

@Maud

This is an opportunity for us to hear what a selection of our readers think about some new pieces of work – much like what happens on, er, the CR blog. Just as you've offered up your opinion here, the feature in Crit will enable more of a group discussion to take place. I think it's rather misplaced that you don't believe anyone has valid or insightful opinions outside of those who write for the magazine?

@action man
so 'people in the industry' will be taking friday off then and wandering along to opinionate for free. if u say so..

@cr
im only saying that with the blog already existing, a static discussion from becky,tom and tim is not relevant in judging success/failure/progression of design. im hopin that prof cr staff can provide insight to the pieces not just what it reminds of and whether they like it. magazines yeh are in trouble, new strategies needed, but dumbing down and cosying up to the sponsors whilst leaving the critique to people who walk in doesnt sound too healthy. theres loads of low return creativity going, report that instead.

the end.

I wish you had centred that type properly on the 'critics wanted' sign.

There, how's that for starters?

I agree with the sentiments from Maud. I'm not saying inviting new writers to discuss work isn't valid, just on a personal level I don't often find critique of individual projects to be particularly interesting. New faces are welcome, but this appears to be more suitable for the CR blog. Why transplant blog-style discussion into a magazine?

What I would love to see in Creative Review is a piece on internships and working for free to get into the design industry, with arguments for and against. Jonathan Baldwin has written excellent stuff on the subject. A debate between him and someone defending the practice of free internships would make for very interesting reading.

Just want to clarify, is it three different people each month who are chosen or the same three people each month? If it's the former, will the opportunity be 'advertised' as it were again?

@Benji
It will be three people each month, so yes, we'll be asking for contributors again soon (but we do also have lots of emails from people to choose from as of now, so that's good)

Well, I think if you want sassy, thoughtful, insightful, idiosyncratic, iconoclastic but never bombastic analysis and wordiness, you should work with me.

“CR should ... look towards implementing new approaches for evaluating design. One alternative would be to consider the use of ... CR ... readers. This multiple reviewing process would provide a wider range of analysis and critique, while facilitating the potential for discussion on the purpose of creativity” – MLA, August 2005

Great move, look forward to seeing this initiative evolve.
