Class Portrait by Anna Brooks and Samantha Harvey, Kingston University, BA (Hons) Graphic Design & Photography

Last week CR helped to judge D&AD's Best New Blood. Here's a selection of what the judges thought were the best pieces on show this year, all of which can be seen at The Old Truman Brewery until this evening...

The full list of this year's Best New Blood 2010 is on the D&AD New Blood website (divided into Advertising, Graphic Design etc). From that selection, here are some of my favourites complete with the students' own descriptive text that accompanies the work.

some great pieces of work, I really love the Ikea pencils, extremely reminiscent of the Alan Fletcher piece.

I went and had a nose on Friday evening - lots of really great stuff. I came out feeling very inspired.

"When you're driving, just drive!" is very powerful. Shoot Military photography is very clever too. Excellent use of print with the comment on light pollution.

I was very impressed with the photography I saw being showcased this year, particularly from a Kirsty Thomas - http://www.kthomasphotography.weebly.com (stie under construction, but there is some excellent stuff to find there!)

Having just "Raid-ed" a load of wasps myself, I loved the rebranding done by Zarya Zarkova.

Excellent show, and congratulations to all the new graduates!

I meant to also mention how annoying it is when you pick up business cards of things you love, they have a web address, and 9/10 times you get "this site is under construction" or the domain registrar's page. If your website isn't done, don't promote it. But make sure your website IS done, because there's people like me who like your work and want to promote it via the web, AND who are in industry. Networking is a valuable tool folks.

If you don't have time to make a website or that isn't your discipline, use something like Behance to showcase your work and link to that. Simple!

I realise my portfolio isn't available for viewing on my site, but I'm not out looking for work and haven't just graduated from uni ;)

I can't believe that this lot was chosen as the best of the New Blood show. There were so many examples of better work than this. Hardly any of it shows a refined execution of typography or layout, or unique illustration style. I think Matthew Lurcock, Chelsea Palmer and Jasper are the only ones that are really worth even mentioning. Come one, I mean a glow in the dark poster for light pollution, how many times have I seen that before. I'm pretty sure at least one student on every graphic communication course does that every year. Not original in the slightest.

In my opinion UWE had the best work and best stall in the show by far.
D&AD New Blood seems to be all about advertising, they should have rewarded the skilled typographers and illustrators that were there.

Some of these pieces are exceptional conceptualization design. My favourite has to be the school photo, such a simple yet effective concept.

Some nice ideas. I think the Science Museum should have hired Dean Gray to do their new branding.

I'm working on another post at the moment which is CR's take on the best work at New Blood. Yesterday's post was just a selection of what was deemed Best New Blood (officially) by the judges who were asked to look round certain stands by D&AD (including me: I judged some, but not all of, the advertising work, for example). I went back to New Blood yesterday afternoon and took lots more photos and hope to have them up online as soon as my camera's recharged.

UPDATE: @Luke This include a fair bit of the illustration and graphics work that was on show, too

@Luke, @Sam Western

To reiterate the point Patrick made on the Science Museum post on Sunday; any comments that descend into personal, off-topic attacks on other commenters will not (and should not, my apologies Luke) be tolerated here. Please read Patrick's comment, reposted here, below:

"To all our readers, a challenge. In the interests of everyone, we want to raise the tone of the debate on this blog. This is a major redesign for a major institution. In the past, discussion of such projects here has quickly descended into relentless negativity, insult and abuse. So here is our challenge to you - be as critical as you like but any comments from now on which, in our opinion, are not thoughtful, well-argued, constructive or which do not move the debate on will be deleted. Improving the level of debate will make this site a better experience for everyone. PB"

Great to see Kingston students producing yet more great work. This year was again a bit disappointing to not see universities not encouraging a greater understanding of interactive design and technologies more, which is definitely something which can give advertising and graphic design students an edge in the current competitive climate for jobs.

I agree with some of the posts dissaproving of the Best New Blood choices, as many other great students are overlooked each year. I certainly think Anna Brooks and Samantha Harvey deserve their title though, very clever, simple and conceptual piece of work. The same applies to Matthew Lurcock, a great idea.

Would love to see the CR choices for best in show.

@Julian Durham

I doubt Wright and Herring saw that ad before making theirs, it only really circulated on the web in April, they'd have to have been quick. If they did see it, the resemblance is minor in that blood is shown. There's a bit more to the Wright and Herring idea, though the Mudra group one makes for a more striking visual.

(The art direction on the first lipstick execution is a little distracting, probably could have framed it differently without the sun visor taking up most of the space).

Looking forward to the follow up post of CR faves!
