Wallace and Gromit star on Christmas stamps

With the Pope campaigning to 'save Christmas', the Royal Mail's seasonal stamps for 2010 will feature two mythical characters whose story has been told and retold down the years so that it is now central to the communal experience of that special time of year – Wallace and Gromit

A somewhat defensive press release from the Royal Mail, no doubt anticipating a Daily Mail headline or two, states that "Royal Mail's policy for Christmas stamps is to alternate non-secular and secular themes. The 2009 stamps showed the nativity as depicted in stained glass windows from the Pre-Raphaelite era and in 2010 a secular theme is featured" ie 'Wallace gives a thumbs-up as Gromit tries on his seasonal gift of a bone-themed pullover' as featured on the £1.46 stamp, below.

The stamps were created by Royal Mail's design team, working with Nick Park and Aardman Animations. They will be available from November 2.

With the BBC idents last year, the re-runs every christmas holiday and the latest film last christmas, and now christmas stamps Wallace and Gromit are turning in to a Christmas institution.
When's the Christmas single due out?

Firmly established as British Heritage Wallace and Gromit truly are loved by all and there is no sign of change. How long can the magic last..?

The Royal Mail clearly trying to save pennies by running re-runs here, If there was ever a apocalypse, Rats, Cockroaches and Wallace and Gromit re-runs would survive...

WOw I can't wait to get me some of these lovelies!

It's sad that they had to preempt comments by explaining why these aren't religious. I think they're brilliant and will be buying them (to keep, not to send!)

Nice stamps, love W&G... just wonder if they could have been a bit more witty... Picture of Grommit queueing in the post office perhaps?
Very christmassy though

I love NIck Parks work. Creature Comforts worked so well and I like the characters here but if we're going to see these guys over and over again, even the smile off Wallace's face may soon disappear. Wallace and Gromit, Only Fools and Horses, The Royal Family (the ones on the couch not the balcony) and the Queens Speech, it's an institution for sure...
Although how long will they keep me smiling if we see them so often?

That aside they are amusing though....

Those are fabulous, I think the US post office could take a hint from Royal Mail and make more interesting stamps this year. Here's to hoping we don't get stuck with ugly sweater stamps again.

So refreshing to see the guys again!!
Wonderful way to emphasize the fuzzy friendly times during the manufactured stress during the holidays.

Christmas will soon be here before you know it. There are lovely stamps for those who have some spare change to purchase them. I suspect more than a few people will keep them rather than send them.

W & G another great production, but will the stamps remain stuck on the envelope if Wallace has a hand or even two in the production line ?

There used to be 2 sets of stamps, one secular and one Christian, so that we could choose which we preferred. For me, Christmas is a Christian festival, and I am disappointed not to be able to choose stamps with a religious theme.

Christmas still means the birth of Christ. Why not have two choices?

I can't believe I missed this story. These are the best Christmas stamps ever. Bringing brightness and friendliness to an often dull and sad world.....Truly British. I'd rather see Wallace & Gromit than the newly engaged Royal couple.

Whilst I am a fan of Wallace and Gromit, they have nothing to do with the Christmas story and I am surprised that there is no choice and that the nativity is not included at all. Also as a keen philatalist who has come across some wonderful Christmas stamps, why are ours so small? What are we trying to hide? Is the Post Office ashamed of the stamps it is producing?

Chrtistmas is a Christian festival, please can we have some stamps to reflect this. Wallace & Gromit would be lovely at any other time of the year or at least give us a choice at Christmas.
