A café with character(s)
If you like some vibrant typography with your tea, and you happen to be in South East London, may we recommend Studio Myersough's new project, The Movement Café in Greenwich?
The Movement Café is a temporary café and performance space situated near the Greenwich DLR station. Designer Morag Myerscough was asked by property developers Cathedral Group to make use of a corner of what was once the Greenwich Industrial site which is being redeveloped into a mixed-use scheme of flats, business units and retail to be called The Movement. The café will occupy part of the site until Christmas.
Myerscough collaborated on the project with poet and author Lemn Sissay. Sissay has been commissioned by Cathedral to write a poem about Greenwich, Shipping Good, which will eventually be set permanently into the road that cuts through the site when it is completed. In the temporary space, this poem runs along a hoarding.
For the café, Myerscough used more of Sissay's work, this time one of his poetic Tweets:
This is the House.
This is the Path.
This is the Gate.
This is the Opening.
This is the Morning.
This is a Person Passing.
This is Eye Contact.
Myersough and three assistants hand painted the text onto a series of boards which they fixed to the scaffolding which forms the main structure of the café. More boards feature a geomteric pattern devised by Myerscough.
Myerscough and her team also had to dip into their knowledge of craft skills to create cushions for the café's seating area and stools.
The furniture was made by Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan of Supergroup from reclaimed laboratory fittings while the cushions were hand sewn from kite fabric (which is waterproof).
Regular readers may remember the Deptford Project, a similar space which Myerscough created for the same developers three years ago uing an old Tube train carriage.
