Barry Keoghan stars in nostalgia-driven Man Utd kit launch ad

The film highlights adidas Originals’ partnership with Man Utd and is a romantic love letter to the club and football itself

Kit launches have become ever-more stylish and creative in recent years, with football clubs recognising the power of film and advertising to assert their culture and history to fans (and beyond) while also pushing sales.

This latest film from adidas Originals and Manchester United, running at over two minutes long, is especially cinematic. Created by Homeground and shot by director Tom Day, it follows the Saltburn and Banshees of Inisherin actor as he muses poetically on the role of football in his life.

There is plenty here for fans to pick up on and enjoy – joining Keoghan are a mix of current Manchester United stars, legends of the club and other famous fans. Plus it’s all set at the club’s former training ground, The Cliff, where a seemingly ‘ordinary’ game is taking place, all far removed from the slick reality of the current Premier League.

Bringing it all together is the soundtrack of Underworld’s Born Slippy, famous for its use at the end of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. The ad is one of a number released this week from adidas for new club kit launches, including films for Arsenal and Newcastle. But club loyalties aside, it is this one that is arguably the most epic.
