Jeb Burroughs on why social media isn’t for him

The photographer talks about the pitfalls of having an online presence and how he’s tried to be more purposeful with his personal projects

Photographer Jeb Burroughs typically gets most of his jobs through word of mouth, and while he admits he could be better at reaching out to editors, what is intentional is his avoidance of social media.

“I don’t actively try to grow an audience. I do think there’s an innate pressure to have a following with the attention economy these days, but I don’t think I’m alone in my general distaste that social media is a bit of a necessary evil,” he tells CR.

“By the time I post a photo on Instagram I will have probably already printed and held it, or sent it to the people who I think will find it interesting and that intentionality relieves a pressure valve of some sort. Rather than making posting on social media the focus, it becomes more of a box-checking exercise that is easier to move on from.”
