Camila Falquez, Gods That Walk Among Us

Camila Falquez’s first solo exhibition, held at the Hannah Traore Gallery in New York, presented 28 photographs shot over the past five years across Cuba, New York, Puerto Rico, and Spain. The images depict Falquez’s interpretation of royalty, taking activists, friends and muses as her subjects and depicting them almost as deities.

What unites the people in her photographs is their intense, personal relationships with the photographer, who has said much of her talent lies in the way she falls “in love” with the people she goes on to shoot. Falquez draws on her Colombian, Mexican and Spanish heritage in her use of colour and in the way she shoots, often playing Salsa, Rumba and Flamenco music on set.
