Exhibitions: Hello, My Name Is, Jeffrey Deitch, Los Angeles

Nadia Lee Cohen’s first major US show at LA’s Jeffrey Deitch gallery showcased work from across both her monographs: Women, which drew together 100 works shot between 2014 and 2020; and Hello, My Name Is, the recently published book from which the exhibition takes its name.

Hello, My Name Is refers to a series of 33 name badges that Cohen has collected over the years from various flea markets and car boot sales. She then created a persona for each one, transforming herself into these individuals, becoming an often unrecognisable subject through meticulous styling, makeup, and prosthetics. Photographs of these characters appear alongside still-life shots of the belongings Cohen imagines them to carry, creating nuanced and thoughtful portraits that are both humorous and touching.
